Philanthropic Activities of Mrs. Betsy Devos

The best description for Mrs. Betsy DeVos’s personality would be a human-reformer. For over 30 years, Mrs. DeVos led many campaigns, political action committees, and party organizations. Both in business and politics, Mrs. Betsy and her husband Dick DeVos searched for innovative resolutions to many social problems.


Nowadays, Mrs. DeVos serves as chairperson of the Windquest Group, a privately held, multi-company organization that concentrates its investments in the fields of clean energy, manufacturing, and technology.


Additionally, Mrs. DeVos makes a great effort to reform through a variety of nonprofit activities. In 1989, along with her husband, Mrs. DeVos founded a firm. Her husband, Dick DeVos, is the former president of the well-known Amway company, and he is also a former president of the NBA franchise Orlando Magic. She is the leader of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Her philanthropic interests vary from small causes to globally important events.


Mrs. DeVos is a member of many national and local boards and is a leading advocate for the educational-choice movement. She serves as head of the AFC ( American Federation for Children) and the Alliance for School Choice.


During the 1990s, Ms. DeVos served on two national charities, Children First America and the American Education Reform Council. The primary purpose of both charities was the expansion of educational choices through vouchers and tax credits.

Besides, she and her husband were active politically and passed Michigan’s first charter-school bill in 1993. In 2000, the couple was unsuccessfully involved in changing the state constitution allowing tax-credit scholarships or vouchers.


Mrs. DeVos was a chair of the Michigan Republican Party for a few years. She started a political action committee in Michigan called the Great Lakes Education Project in response to the defeat of the proposed constitutional amendment. The committee was dedicated to promoting education improvement by expanding charter schools in the state.
